TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

The purpose of this letter is to certify the scientific credentials of Mr. Still, and the originality and utility (potential and actual) of his new mathematical techniques for data analysis. Some years ago Mr Still came to see me with some of his early ideas about the dynamics of crowd movement. Over the next few months he made rapid progress in turning these ideas into a software package for the simulation and analysis of crowd dynamics, known as Legion. It quickly became apparent that he had hit upon an important scientific tool for understanding many aspects of crowd dynamics. It also became clear that Legion was worthy of a PhD, and Mr Still was registered at this university as a mature student on our PhD programme in Interdisciplinary Mathematics. He has successfully completed his PhD thesis on crowd dynamics, under my supervision.
This work was undertaken within the MIRA@W programme (Mathematical Interdisciplinary Research at Warwick) of the Mathematics Institute of the University of Warwick. Warwick is one of the UK's leading universities and its mathematics department is among the top five in the country.
At the core of Legion lies an understanding of complex dynamical systems that is extremely general, with many potential applications. In particular, some of Mr Still's most recent work - not part of the PhD but related to it - has opened up the serious possibility of detecting various kinds of heart disease by computer analysis of ECG data. In early trials, Mr Still took care to ensure that his analysis was not biased by knowledge of the answer, and he set up a series of blind tests. He notified me in advance of the protocols for these tests, so that I can confirm that his methodology was unbiased.

The results to date are distinctly promising. The main point I wish to make here is that they refer to genuine blind trials. The technique has not been 'massaged' in any way to take advantage of special knowledge of the data sets used.

Mr Still is what I term an 'intuitive mathematician'. He is a constant source of original ideas, and a number of these have already formed the basis of commercial products and activities. He is one of the most creative and original thinkers that I know. He has a pleasant, friendly disposition, and works well with other creative scientists; he adds drive and determination, as well as considerable intellectual power, to any group of which he is a part.

For a long time he has wanted to develop some ideas that can be used to help people, rather than just as a source of income. He is very keen to develop his methods for analysing ECG data into a clinical technique, for that reason. He is not averse to commercial involvement either, but in this case the real driving force is the wish to help improve medical diagnoses, and thereby help patients. In a similar way, his main drive for the creation of Legion was the wish to improve crowd safety.

I believe that if he is made part of a small team, combining the appropriate expertise, then that team will be able to develop his methods into a useful clinical technique. A lot of development work and rigorous testing will be needed, for obvious reasons, but the essential basis is already in place. I know that Mr Still is capable of this kind of development work, because I have witnessed him doing it. For example, in my opinion Legion is by far the best available method for obtaining both quantitative and qualitative results on crowd flow that correspond accurately to real crowds. The scientific ideas involved have been tested thoroughly, and the method works very effectively. The core ideas are original to Mr. Still and cannot be found in the published literature. Legion constitutes a major breakthrough in crowd modelling, with important applications to the design of new buildings or complexes with public access, the analysis of existing buildings, and other central issues of modem crowd management.
I am convinced that with the right support, his methods for ECG data analysis could become equally successful. Moreover, his presence in a research environment would have beneficial spin-off in other directions too, since he has a happy knack of seeing what the main features of other people's problems are. His intuition for subtle patterns of behaviour in complex data is impressive, the best I've ever seen.

Biology personal statement

Since as long ago as I can remember I have always been fascinated by the natural world. That childish fascination has not left me but deepened over the years. This interest has led me to my love of biology, ecology, animal behaviour and evolution.

Following my graduation from High School I studied Biological Sciences for two years at the Catholic University of Chile in Santiago. From March 1997 to November 1998 I was obliged to take a break from my studies at university as my father was moving from the city to a more remote rural area. While helping my father I was able to work closely with birds of prey among others and I was successful in breeding the endangered chinchillas. During my time away from university I continued to deepen my knowledge of my subject and studied evolutionary thinking and the biological basis of behaviour. I also worked for a brief time as a translator which made me think that perhaps my English was good enough o complete my studies in an English speaking country.

Since coming to Oxford and studying at OLT I have improved my written English a great deal. I am a member of The Natural History Museum (London) and recently attended a course called 'The History of Evolution'. The course was organised by Birkbeck College and took place at the Natural History museum in London each Wednesday. The course has been fascinating and has served to confirm my suspicion that the more I learn of this subject the more I want to know.

I am hopeful that my previous studies in Santiago, my maturity and my experience in this field will allow me to enter the second year of an undergraduate programme in the UK. After completing my undergraduate it is my wish to continue studying at postgraduate level and ultimately conduct my own research in this area.

My other academic interests include, Paleoanthropology, and the history and development of science. I am most interested in the writings of Darwin and Thomas and Henry Huxley.

I am keen on fitness training, horse riding, trekking and diving. I am most interested in all outdoor pursuits. I am also keen to develop my newly found skills in classical singing and dance.

I realise that as a non-native student I will be required to work harder than my contemporaries and I am prepared to do that. I have a cheerful and open-minded disposition and look forward to sharing and exploring new ideas.

I hope may application will be considered favourably.

Business and law personal statement

Academically, I have always been a very determined and studious individual, hence why I knew that a degree at University would be the definite next step. I have a broad interest in many subject areas yet feel drawn towards a law or business orientated degree. With regards to Business, the reasoning behind my choice is the complex and intriguing nature of the subject. I particularly enjoy the way business so appropriately blends in with everyday issues. Since taking the subject at A-Level my interest has grown and matured and I am able to view many businesses analytically and make suggestions regarding possible improvements. Law is an area which has interested me from an early age. I enjoy extensive reading and recognise that this is essential in studying law. I consider myself to be well suited to a career in law as I pay much attention to detail and take pleasure in undergoing work which raises social issues in today’s society and requires the skill to manipulate evidence and present persuasive arguments. I also believe that the Psychology A-Level I have has aided me in observing the actions of others and how their opinions and memories are influenced by external factors. This area of work requires much confidence which I believe I posses and can use to my advantage in order to gain recognition in this competitive field of work.

My work experience is very broad due to a variety of positions I have held in differentiating working environments. My experience working for Royal Worchester & Spode in the Debenhams’ department store has been the most influential. The up-market company requires a confidant disposition from a Sales Advisor such as myself and a proficient memory in order to ensure product knowledge is to an optimum standard. I was also given the responsibility to train a new employee which displays the high degree of trust my employers have for me.

My educational experiences have been of great use to me from a position of form captain in Secondary School to aiding the organisation of mass celebrations in College. Responsibilities such as these have helped me to mature and take my positions seriously so that I am respected by staff. My position of English Prefect in Year 11 required a large portion of my time as I was in charge of aiding the entire English department. My interest in the Italian language has also led me to have an article I wrote regarding the exploitation of women on Italian Television published in ‘L’Italiano’ newspaper, to which I was very content to have my views expressed.

During Secondary School I also attended evening Italian classes where I was presented with ‘The Student of the Year Award’ due to my excellent standard of work. The class required me to organise my time efficiently so that other schoolwork did not suffer as a result of my extra GCSE. As a result of these classes and of my Italian parents I now speak the language fluently.

Sport and leisure also interests me and during college I decided to use this interest to do charity work for RNIB where I raised £250 and abseiled 120ft down Westminster University. I played Netball for the Harrow Netball Team and competed in the OGI UK Games for the Harrow and Wembley team where I was awarded several trophies and a gold and bronze medal for long jump and javelin.

Chemical Engineering

I have always enjoyed studying Maths, Physics and Chemistry, and I would like the opportunity to continue this study. Chemical Engineering appeals to me because of the challenges involved in the application of scientific theory to practical, real world problems such as how to deal with nuclear waste. I particularly look forward to studying fluid dynamics as I was introduced to this during the Engineering Education Scheme (EES). I am aware that in today’s world chemical engineering has an increasingly important role across a wide range of industries from pharmaceuticals to petrochemicals. The broad range of career paths, and the opportunity to contribute to society through technological innovation, is for me, one of the main attractions of chemical engineering.

I have applied to take part in the Year In Industry scheme during which I hope to gain practical experience, as well as greater maturity enabling me to go into my degree course with improved skills and broader experience. I also hope to study e-learning courses on project management and presentation skills run by the IChemE. In Year 12 I took part in the EES, which improved my understanding and skills in team working, time management, and report writing, as well as visual and oral presentation. Throughout the course of the project the team had to frequently correspond with mentors in industry and academia and this experience has broadened my appreciation of practice and application in a real life situation. In July I attended a week-long ‘Into Engineering’ seminar run by REACT Engineering. Working in two teams, we were given a design exercise based upon a typical decommissioning project. I also attended a Headstart course at Newcastle University, which I thoroughly enjoyed. One of the main activities was to design, manufacture and test a small crane. I found both of these experiences very challenging, as we were given only limited time so we had to prioritise our tasks and carefully plan our work.

This year a fellow student and I were awarded £500 by the European Scholarship Prize to fund a visit to Prague to do research for our A-level History coursework. I gained an understanding of the city’s culture and history and further developed my independence. During the summer I represented my school on a Connexions review of a government white paper on 14-19 education. I gained an insight into the government’s proposals and learned a lot about working with different groups of people. Last year I was part of the editorial team for the school magazine. I wrote a number of articles and I was responsible for ensuring that staff contributions were ready for the deadline. I also enjoy participating in a range of sports and have represented the school at football and cricket, which has further enhanced my team working skills.

In my spare time I am working towards my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. In September I completed a 4-day expedition in the Lake District, which tested my endurance but gave me a great sense of achievement. As part of the award I have been helping at the local youth café once a week, which I am really enjoying as it gives me the chance to meet new people. I also enjoy reading, particularly books on physics and Russian history. I am really interested in computers and I am currently trying to configure a Linux based file and print server for my home network.

Chemistry

MadNatSci's personal statement

What I love about chemistry is the constant sense of discovery: looking at the simplest reactions on a molecular level is like glimpsing a whole new world. I am keen to learn at the cutting edge of current knowledge and to contribute to new discoveries. During the course of my degree I hope to take part in some research; after leaving university I am looking to work in science, possibly in research, and some experience will almost certainly come in useful. I would also like to continue my study of French at university – I think it is a beautiful language and one of my ambitions is to become fluent.

As part of my study, in addition to the A level course, I have taken part in the RSC Analytical Chemistry competition in a school team; I am a regular subscriber to the New Scientist magazine and have attended several courses, including an ISCO course on Forensic Science. I am also an affiliate of the RSC, and I’m currently looking for work experience possibilities in this field.

I joined Kimbolton School on a scholarship and during my time here I’ve won seven prizes in total, including two for French and Maths; I am now looking forward to the challenges presented by my appointment as one of fifteen Gown Prefects in the school. However, as well as taking my work and responsibilities seriously I have a lot of fun as well. I sing in the school choir and the chamber choir, and currently take singing lessons: I hope to continue with my singing at university, ideally in a university or college choir. I have represented both my House and School in General Knowledge teams and, although not exactly a gifted sportswoman, I’m happy to take part in some sport for my House. I enjoy taking part and trying new sports and although my talents aren’t likely to take me into the university teams, I look forward to continuing to ‘have a go’! I have also taken part in numerous musicals and plays in the school. In January I joined the Kimbolton Amnesty International Group and have been involved regularly since then. As a member of the school’s Community Service Unit I spent a year working in a primary school, and another in a school for handicapped children, both on Thursday afternoons during term-time.

I believe that my academic ability and dedication to my subject make me an ideal candidate to study chemistry at university. I look forward to taking advantage of all the opportunities that will be open to me as a student, both in work and leisure time.

Philibob's personal statement

I find the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Games Physics interesting and so I have decided to study a course to include these areas. I am currently studying an A level in Information Technology in which I have used Visual Basic in Microsoft Excel and Access. At home I have used the actionscript language in Macromedia Flash to build an interactive personal website. I found this aspect of computing very interesting and so I will really enjoy programming in C++ and other programming languages. I am also studying an A level in Mathematics that I really enjoy. This would be useful for many parts of the course such as games physics.

When I’ve played computer games in the past I have always wanted to be able to create something similar. Consequently, the computer games programming course stood out as something that I really wanted to do. I have used some software programs such as Microsoft Visual Basic, Softimage|XSI ESP 3.0, Discreet 3DS MAX 5 (evaluation version) and Maya Personal Learning Edition. I would like to see people’s enjoyment when playing a game, knowing that I took part in producing it.

I have emailed a few programming companies such as Valve Software, id software, Lionsoft, Electronic Arts and Codemasters explaining my situation and asking whether it would be better to take a games programming course or a software development course and learn game specific items afterwards or in my spare time. All of the replies advised me to take the computer games programming course as this way I would already possess the games programming knowledge.

Undertaking my work experience as a sales assistant in a computer store allowed me to develop skills such as working in a team and dealing with customers. Although I was working with others a lot of the time, I also had to work independently. This allowed me to use my own initiative and solve problems.

Whilst attending Sutton High Sports College, I have done a large amount of voluntary work. During years 10 and 11, I helped with the schools open days and sports days where I did scoring. I also took part in after school activities such as playing music. Outside of school I have helped at “Darby and Joan’s” which is for old aged pensioners where they can get together for company, and to talk and play bingo. Year 12 saw me helping with the year 6 induction day, and assisting with scoring on both the school’s open day and the St. Helens Athletic Finals. Participation in a first aid course gained me a certificate in “Emergency Aid in the workplace for Appointed Persons.” This involved areas such as resuscitation and control of bleeding.

Hobbies and interests include reading books; the genres preferred being science fiction and horror. I also like playing piano of which I am currently working towards grade 8, and I have played “The Skaters’ Waltz” at Parr Hall (a concert hall) in Warrington. I enjoy using my computer for playing games, including playing games online, and for using the internet to keep up to date with current news in the computing and gaming world, new hardware and software releases.

My interests cover a wide area, which I believe will help me in both academic and social life at university.

My aim is to become a computer games programmer developing any type of game for PC or console, and I believe that a university course will help me achieve my goal.

Soulfish's personal statement

From an early age I’ve always been deeply interested in computing. It was my dad, introducing me to the computer systems at his work place that first sparked this interest. I can always remember the feeling of wanting to know just how computers worked, why they worked and what else they could do.

This interest never left me, only growing more profound and passionate with every new discovery I made. From communicating with an artificial intelligence to seeing the wonders of the Internet for the first time, computers have left me fascinated with just how much power yet mystery they hold.

The A-Levels I chose to study have all helped me to develop both myself and my understanding of the subject. Physics for example has helped me to understand how certain parts of a computer function, while Computing has given me a greater insight into the business aspects of the computer industry.
Chemistry and Physics have both helped to improve my analytical and evaluative skills. Within maths I have been lucky enough to have a teacher who was very interested in computer science. He has been especially helpful, lending me books such as Gödel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid. This has given me an insight into the richness that is computer science.

My interest in computing has not been restricted to the classroom and college life. Within the last twelve months I’ve used the knowledge that I’ve gained over the past twelve years together with the help of my family to set up my own computer related business. This has given me a totally new perspective on how certain things function, and how business operates. The writing of a business plan was a totally alien experience for me, but over the course of 9 months I researched and planned, and finally when the plan was complete I was rewarded with the satisfaction of knowing that I had completed something that most people would never have the chance to do especially at my age.
Through the setting up of the company and its subsequent running I have learnt many things. These include how to balance tasks effectively, how critical teamwork can be and how to delegate tasks to get the job done quickly and efficiently.

As well as spending time both studying and helping to run the business I understand the importance of having time to relax. One of my hobbies that I try to make time for is learning to fly, and gaining my private pilots license. As a child I dreamed of becoming a pilot and luckily its one dream that I’ve managed to follow. I love the freedom that flying gives you and the control that you have when in the air. Training for my private pilots license (PPL) has also involved me taking onboard a lot of responsibility for the safety of those onboard, and those around the aircraft. From ensuring that I carry out the pre-flight checks correctly, and knowing what’s around you both while you’re on the ground and in the air to ensuring that I’m prepared for any eventuality.

I also enjoy both playing and watching tennis. I’ve played in various competitions before, and have helped to umpire junior matches at my club. To ensure that I can fit everything in I’ve had to develop very good time management, prioritising what I need to do efficiently.

I’m looking forward with great anticipation to the challenges that studying for a degree in computer science will bring.

personal statement

Since my early teenage years I have had a strong interest in the world that I live in; wanting to understand where mine and others’ places can be and are in society; not just locally but globally, so I follow current affairs programmes on the television and read newspapers and journals, such as the ‘Economist’, with interest. However, I wish to explore further the causes and effects of human interactions. The study of economics and politics provides explanations and predictions, as well as more universal theories, which underlie human behaviour, as well as offering insight into the validity of the various political choices competing for our favour.

The subjects I am studying at A Level provide a good grounding in skills and knowledge for these two interrelated disciplines. English Language ensures that I can analyse, and communicate clearly and effectively, in both the spoken and written mode. History – the study of the past and its implications – is most valuable as it provides research skills and improves my essay writing, as does Psychology which also gives some insights into how our minds variously function. Physics develops experimental and – along with Mathematics – analytical and problem solving skills, as well as ensuring my abilities have breadth. I am most enthusiastic at the prospect of having my abilities stretched and raised to a much higher standard, especially as I have not studied economics or politics before.

By the end of my degree course I also expect to be a more astute, mature person; I shall certainly take advantage of all the various social and sporting opportunities your university offers. It is my current career ambition to have a job in professional politics as an MP, to play a part in national policy making and legislation, as well as experiencing the pride of being a democratic representative of the people. This ambition flows from my concern for the wellbeing of others and the continued freedom of our people. Your degree course is ideal preparation for this career because it will impart the knowledge necessary for informed policy formation, and the skills – such as good communication and effective debating – needed to succeed in this competitive occupation.

I am a member of the Conservative party and follow their policy reformation after 1997 with interest. Currently my other interests include science and technology – I enjoy reading the ‘New Scientist’ journal, for instance – as well as computers, of which I regard myself as an advanced user. For example, I use the Internet for study and research into areas of interest, such as comment on government policy decisions, and upgrading hardware myself. Also, last year I had a 3D computer game ‘add-on’ – designed by myself over a lengthy period, teaching myself a great number of skills in this field – packaged on a number of international magazines, including the UK-based ‘PC Gamer’. I also enjoy walking with my family and our dogs in the Dorset countryside, and am a member of the Vegan Society.

personal statement

Examination of any quality newspaper will probably demonstrate that more of the headlines address economic problems than any other topic. The importance and relevance of economic related disciplines to the modern world have led me to want to pursue the study of the subject at a higher level. I am particularly interested in the behaviour of firms and organisations from an economic point of view and I have based my A-level coursework in this field. During my study, I have come across many real life complexities and while attempting to explain these theories, I have developed a keen interest in analysing and understanding how the world of business is influenced by economics.

I have created an economics revision website for A-level and GCSE students. It is primarily intended to help younger students gain an understanding of core economic principles but has also helped me improve my own computer and presentational skills. I regularly read newspapers and economic publications to keep up to date with economic developments and I am able to use my mathematical and analytical skills to apply different economic theories to a range of real-life economic situations.

Last year, I took part in an economics and business project called Young Enterprise in which I set up a small company and sold products to students at our school. I enjoyed the chance to put some of my business economic theory into practice and was able to enhance my management and communication skills. I also gained a distinction in the associated exam.

To gain practical experience in the workplace, I worked for two weeks at a small software company specialising in financial software. I currently have a part time job and this has taught me much about teamwork, responsibility and time management in the workplace.

In my spare time, I enjoy reading, swimming, sketching and solving puzzles and logic problems. I have redesigned and been responsible for the maintenance of my school’s website.

I believe that I will gain a highly marketable set of skills from the study of economics at university. I have found economics to be a challenging and diverse discipline and I am interested in both macro and micro economics. It is this variation of perspective, combined with its real world importance, that makes economics an appealing subject to study at university

Since childhood, I have been fascinated by the constantly changing world that we live in, wanting to understand and explore the causes and effects of current and future human interactions. During my teenage years I started listening to the BBC World Service and reading internationally recognized journals and magazines. I have become convinced that a third level education relevant to world affairs would help me gain knowledge that would allow me to pursue a wide range of possibilities. My current career ambition is to find a suitable role within an international organisation, such as the UN, ideally with specific focus on assisting people who have been displaced due to civil unrest, war, famine or other natural disaster.

I was born in Australia to a family of political refugees who had escaped communist Czechoslovakia. After my country’s Velvet Revolution, my family returned to Prague, the capital of a then newly formed democracy. This radical change helped to widen my perspective and see the world from a different point of view. Today I am a bi-national avid traveler, having visited more than 40 countries. I have attended six exchange programmes with partner schools: one in Sweden, one in Germany and four in France. I have also been on two volunteer programmes with Earthwatch, firstly being in Spain, where we helped gather information to design marine protected areas and then in Tanzania, helping to determine the impact of forest fragmentation through monitoring rainforest bird populations. The Tanzanian expedition in particular was an eye opener, not only because of the local cultural differences and the poverty, but also because of the amount of teamwork and hardship we had to face living in a remote area like the Usambara Mountains. The experience also made me aware of how foreign countries and NGOs are helping to alleviate the poverty in Tanzania.

At school, my position as the only girl in my class has ensured that I have maintained a somewhat independent approach to my studies. I have chosen a broad range of subjects for my Final Exams, not only because I like challenges, but also because I believe I will obtain a lot of all-around knowledge and skills from them: Mathematics and Physics have helped me understand the physical and abstract world around me, while Czech and English have shown the beauty of literature, which has become a great passion for me, Herman Hesse being my favourite author. I currently represent my school in the Prague Model of the United Nations, where I am I delegate for Germany in the Third Committee.

Aside from academia, I have a passion for a number of hobbies. Ever since I first visited Egypt, as a 12 years old, I have enjoyed egyptology, with all the facts and mysteries surrounding it. I enjoy the arts in many aspects opera has a special place for me, as my mother was, in her youth one of Czechoslovakia’s most promising opera singers. I also enjoy Photography, particularly black and white. I held a small exhibition of my work in Prague last year. As a child I enjoyed ballet, and even competed in local events. Now, sports have become more important to me: while being in the Czech Quiksilver Snowboarding team, I have achieved commendable results in freestyling contests on a national level. I am looking forward to improve my technique and hope to participate in international competitions. Every Summer I spend at least one month in France perfecting my French. Apart from speaking fluent French, English, Czech and Slovak, I have been studying German at school and have also been trying to self-study Hebrew. I am a active member of Mensa, Net-Aid.org, Greenpeace and the Czech–Japanese association.

I look forward to the challenges and opportunities that studying in the UK will present. I value very greatly the chance to be a part of such a reknowned institution as your college is, and I believe that in some small way I may add to its whole, through my personality, work effort and experiences to date.

It’s all about the headline. It’s about getting your point across in the most direct way you can. These personal statements are very good example of this, in just a few lines I have to get my message of why I want do a degree in Journalism across to my prospective universities. That is one of the reasons why I love to write, the challenge of putting over a complex thought or concept to a large audience of people and convey it in such a way everybody will understand it. As the great writer Hemingway once said, “My aim is to put down on paper what I see and what I feel in the best and simplest way.”

My own personal experience of journalism started young, my dad used to write for a magazine and take me with him when he went to interview people, since then I have been fascinated with the industry. When I was 14 I was lucky enough to get a work experience placement at “News International” in Wapping. I got to work on the websites of “FiredUp.com”, “Revolver.com” and “Page3.com” as well as have a tour of the offices of “The Sun”, “News Of The World” and “The Times”, I have also recently been offered a day’s work experience at my local paper and I am currently waiting for news of work experience at the BBC.

I pride myself on being well organised and thorough in my research. I have also developed many skills such as interview techniques and being able to see things from another perspective, a skill I have acquired through Sociology and Communication Studies, analytical skills through Film Studies and Media Studies and I have learnt about analysing and collating numerical data and factual evidence in Psychology. Although I have already completed three A-Levels and two AS Levels, I have taken a year out to study AS French, Sociology and Spanish. I did this in order to improve my grades and to give me a wider choice of qualifications as my previous subjects are all very similar with their syllabus as well the fact multiple languages would be an invaluable advantage to have when working in the area of communication.

Some of my outside interests are music, politics, the Internet and reading. Music in particular is a great love of mine, I regularly attend “gigs” and concerts and have been an active member of the “Sum 41 Street Team” for over a year, this involves spreading publicity through flyers and posters to promote the band, I find it very fulfilling and enjoyable. Another one of my interests is the Internet, I contribute articles to a site dealing with issues such as “top-up fees” and other important student matters, which I enjoy greatly and is helping to improve my knowledge of university for the future. I have a part time job waitressing at a local hotel which I do a few nights a week. It gives me a sense of my own independence and responsibility, I also help my mother at the local Red Cross during half terms and holidays cooking for the elderly and have also recently volunteered to sell Poppies for Remembrance Sunday throughout my town. Another activity of mine is being my tutor group representative for our college’s student council and regularly attend meetings to deal with concerns of the student body.

I am thoughtful, organised and handle pressure well, I love to write and it is my ambition to do so, I believe I can bring many things to the courses I have selected and in turn can get a lot out of them as well.

法律

The subject of law fascinates me extensively. I am intrigued by developments in the law and the way that it adapts to an ever-changing society. I feel I would be suited to a law degree as I am at my best when challenged, relish the opportunity of lateral thinking and enjoy evaluating the microcosm of human relations.

I have improved my understanding of the law by spending 8 weeks in a Solicitors Office. I benefited from this vastly, as I was able to attend both Basingstoke's County and Magistrates Courts on frequent occasions, to take notes and observe cases that my employer was accountable for. The experience was enthralling as I learnt about the work undertaken at a small high-street firm, the ambience of a courtroom, and more about the officials that occupy it.

Recently, I attended Winchester Crown Court to gain first-hand experience of a complex and serious murder case. The defendant used the partial defence of provocation on the grounds of an affair, which was later dismissed. I had strong feelings about the handling and outcome of the case, which confirmed my thoughts of law as a career. I am looking forward to attending a conference in London next month where Chris Clarkson is lecturing.

At my secondary school I had the privilege of becoming Head Boy. As part of this role I gave many speeches to my contemporaries from different schools, as well as parents and professionals. I also chaired the Student Council where I had an active input into my school's welfare, delegated workloads and took expeditions with teachers representing the school as an ambassador. I also helped with the bid for my school's conversion to 'Technology College Status'. And was awarded the 'Harriet Costello Award' for achieving the highest GCSE results in the academic year 2001-2002.

I enjoy English because I am able to express myself creatively through essays and discussion. I am reading Dickens' 'Great Expectations' as part of my English Literature course, and have found the depiction of the Victorian legal system of particular interest.

Outside of my compulsory activities, I have taken part in Karate for 10 years; achieving the highest standard of black belt. This experience has taught me about dedication and focus. I am an avid reader, and enjoyed reading G. Williams' 'Learning the Law' which addresses many issues facing a law student. Helena Kennedy's 'Eve was Framed' opened my eyes to the problems facing women encountering the legal system, and I am currently reading J.A.G Griffiths' 'The Politics of the Judiciary'. I keep abreast of legal issues by doing background research and reading The Times' weekly legal supplement.

I was Managing Director of my Young Enterprise's (YE) Company entitled 'Starz'. YE is a national charity which educates young people through enterprise and business simulation. As Director, I wrote a report which consequently won 'Best Company Report 2001'. I was also the Managing Director of my school's team at the Business Challenge
2000. Having copious amounts of practice in managerial positions has helped boost my confidence, and improve my time-management skills.

From my experiences thus far, I feel that I would be greatly suited to university life. I am confident the social and academic lifestyle at university would allow me to develop as a person. I would like to become a solicitor and believe that a law degree will significantly aid me to achieve this goal.

I first realised I wished to study law whilst reading a newspaper, when it suddenly occurred to me that every article was somehow related to the law. I remember thinking how amazing it was that such a diverse range of issues could be linked back to a single word. This truly unique quality of influencing all aspects of life (although I am sure there are plenty of economists who would question its uniqueness) has prompted me to read law as an undergraduate. It intrigues me because it is continually evolving over time, faster rate than anything I have met in my current studies, in order to remain a true reflection of an ever-changing society.

I built upon my initial interest by avidly reading "The Law Machine" by Marcel Berlins and Clare Dyer; it provided me with a firm grounding in the essential principles of the British legal system and highlighted its apparent weaknesses. To further consolidate my knowledge I read "Learning the Law" by Glanville Williams and have kept myself informed of current legal events printed in the "The Times", I have also attended a law seminar at King's College, University of London.

I thought it a wise move to pursue an insight into how the law works in reality. I successfully applied to become a Berkshire Witness Service Volunteer and thus embarked on an in-depth training course. This incorporated an introduction to the functions of the Crown Prosecution Service and discussions of the skills required to work with people from many social backgrounds. My responsibilities mainly involve providing emotional support for witnesses throughout their trials, this has helped me develop an appreciation of what the law represents to someone from outside the court system and how deeply it can impact on their lives.

In order to gain a different perspective of the law, I obtained a work experience placement with a local solicitor's firm. My work evolved from basic office duties, such as filing, faxing and answering telephone calls, into accompanying solicitors to court and liasing with barristers on behalf of the firm. The opportunity to work alongside people who have dedicated their lives to the law has strengthened my resolve to study law and given me the confidence to make a well-informed decision.

Throughout my school life, I have maintained an independent, self-motivated approach to my studies. Having studied a broad range of A Level subjects, I feel I have acquired a wide variety of skills: from Mathematics and Physics I have learnt the art of questioning the world around us and developing a keen sense of intellectual curiosity; from English Literature and General Studies I have understood the importance of expressing myself clearly and concisely through words; whilst from ICT I have developed a sound understanding of an area which is playing an increasingly important role in society.

My role as Deputy Head Boy has helped me gain a sense of responsibility and maturity; tasks such as organising large numbers of people, arranging important school events and making speeches to large audiences have helped me develop strong personal and communication skills. These have been further strengthened through my duties as a sixth form mentor for the lower school pupils, where I provide support and advice for younger pupils who are struggling to cope with the pressures of school life. I have also held positions on the student council, presenting my views and those of my peers to the senior school staff. Above all else, I have learnt the rewards of making a positive contribution towards school life in more than an academic sense and think I can take this understanding with me to university.

Aside from schoolwork I have a strong passion for rugby, representing and captaining my school and district at all levels as well as participating in a sports tour to South Africa. My other interests include football, cricket and I am a keen chess player, competing during the tour to South Africa.
I believe I can contribute a genuine passion and enthusiasm for reading law; I am hoping to study at an institution which presents law as an intellectual discipline in its own right, one which will allow me to develop the skills of analysis, reasoning and discussion required to be successful beyond undergraduate level.

I would like to apply to do a Management degree. Having acted as Managing Director on a Young Enterprise Team whilst doing my ‘AS’ levels, I came up with innovative ideas that made a very successful company. Having held management positions within Human Resources, Operations, and Finance, I quickly realised that pursuing a management degree at university would be ideal for me.

After my GCSE’s, I held a temporary job as a junior in an Insolvency practice, in order to gain work experience. Having to work to tight deadlines taught me how to work independently as part of a professional team. I learnt that in business, if one person lacks productivity, then everyone else can suffer, and also how to motivate others as a means of preventing such issues. I used the skills learnt to enhance my role as the Managing Director of my young Enterprise company, particularly methods of motivation and delegation, and the significance of being accountable for others. Having spent nearly three years working part time in a Health food shop alongside my studies, I developed my communication skills, with both colleagues and customers, and proved to be a trustworthy employee.

Being appointed as Deputy Head Boy in the sixth form was a great honour to me. My skills were greatly enhanced by holding this position, as I would often have to listen, and respond to issues brought up by fellow prefects, and students lower down the school. Through activities such as Lunch duty, I learnt the worth of different leadership skills, and that it is important to treat everyone as an individual in order to get results. I was always keen to stay into the evening to help out at school events.

Socialising is very important to me, and I am always keen to meet new people. I enjoy trying new foods to increase my knowledge of different cultures, and my culinary skills will prove very useful in independent university life. I enjoy travelling, and learning about modern history. Having recently returned from Prague, I visited a concentration camp. This was a moving experience for me, and something I will never forget. Music is one of my biggest hobbies, and I use music to help me unwind and reflect on things. I use the internet to keep up with current affairs and sports news.

I have always been a keen sportsman, representing my school in many sporting activities. I enjoy running, particularly competing in sprint races, but also long distance running as a means of keeping fit. I always try to go for a run every evening, during breaks between my A Level studies. I represented my school as a keen member of the district and Maccabi Great Britain athletics teams, particularly in the relay. I formally played tennis and table tennis in national competitions, and more recently I have played in football, rugby, and cricket leagues outside of school.

I believe that my experiences have prepared me for independent university life. My social skills together with my ambition to succeed in life prove me to be good candidate for a Management Degree.

I have always been fascinated by my mathematical studies and, having a flair for the subject, there was never any doubt that I would choose mathematics as a degree. It is a pivotal subject on which so many others depend (such as physics and chemistry). I relish the challenge of problem solving that mathematics provides. For me, it is an endlessly intriguing subject, as the discipline appears limitless, allowing so much scope for further study and research.

Having studied all four branches of the syllabus, I believe I am a well-rounded mathematician. Pure mathematics is my personal favourite because of its focus on thought processes and problem solving techniques. As I am the sole candidate for further mathematics in my year group, I am studying it without support from school. Having no lessons has meant that I have had to develop an independent, self-reliant approach to mathematics, which I believe is invaluable, especially when faced with a system of learning where the emphasis is placed on the student rather than the tutor. Due to clashes in my sixth form's timetable, I studied AS physics at a college in Leeds city centre. Although this meant travelling several times a week during school hours, I still thoroughly enjoyed the subject, as it allowed me to apply mathematics to different situations, and I am continuing to study it for A2.

Last year, I qualified for the British Mathematical Olympiad, run by the UKMT, which I hope to qualify for again this year. I also enjoy reading books of a mathematical nature, allowing me to extend my mathematical knowledge beyond the content of my A-level courses. I recently represented the school in a national debating competition, arguing the case against the right to privacy for public figures. I also work for the sixth form paper. I have participated in several school concerts and productions as a member of the choir and as a violinist, at which I am Grade 5. Last year, I also captained three form groups in the Year Nine Music Festival. This entailed organising a choir, an ensemble (which I conducted) and several soloists, rehearsing for several months at breaks and lunchtimes and finally performing in the competition.

I have worked voluntarily in a primary school as an assistant to the Year Four class teacher. While I was working at the school, it underwent an OfSTED inspection, as did the teacher of the class I was designated to. During one of the class inspections, I was entrusted with groups of students, teaching them how to use the data logging equipment, for which I was favourably mentioned in the report. For the past year, I have been working part-time in the busy restaurant of a large department store in Leeds. Although not being particularly high on mathematical content, it has provided me with an opportunity to improve my ability to cope under pressure and my recent performance review has quoted me as a "hard-working, trusted and well-liked member of staff". However, I have now finished this job in order to concentrate on my A2 studies. I would love to pursue a career in the field of mathematics and I believe my choice of institutions matches my capabilities as well as my aspirations to become a successful mathematician.

Maths and computing personal statement

The study of mathematical sciences has intrigued me for many years. The decision to study A levels in both Maths and Physics stemmed from a high interest level and strong aptitude in both subject areas. This was reflected in the AS grades I received in June 2002; achieving an A grade in mathematics which has inspired me further in my pursuit of the subject.

My interest has spread to computers and trying to link the two together has played a big part of my life in the last few years. I have taught myself, using books and other available sources, how to program in HTML and this has made it possible for me to take an active role in web design.

My other academic interests include Business Studies, especially management and finance areas which link with sections of the maths course. My choice to include a humanities subject at A level was partly encouraged by my need to analyse and evaluate situations, Business Studies gives me the chance to do this in great detail and I find it therapeutic to get involved in relevant case studies. I am also taking an A level in General Studies which is increasing my knowledge of political and cultural issues. The subject also encourages group discussions concerning current affairs and provides me with the opportunity to input my opinions.

For the last few years I have been a member of a Duke of Edinburgh scheme running locally within the college. In June 2001 I completed the Bronze Award and am now working towards my Gold. This has given me a lot of experience in teamwork, problem solving and maintaining a high level of responsibility. These qualities have been taken on into a successful work experience placement in year 10 and my part time job as a sales/management assistant at respectable retail outlet Marks and Spencer.

I have enjoyed my time in the Sixth Form and have taken pleasure from both the academic and extra-curricular activities. I feel that I possess the qualities required to continue maths on to a higher level and combine it with modules that both interest me now and in areas which I hope to build on whilst at university. I am confident that this enthusiasm will combine with my strong determination and motivation, enabling me to succeed in the challenges that university presents.

英语

Ever since I have had the ability to understand it, I have been fascinated by the English language. As a child, I would either be writing, reading or telling stories and ever sine then, have read a wide variety of both fiction and non-fiction texts from a variety of genres and eras.

This passion for language has led me to many different extra-curricular activities. For the past four years, I have attended a Youth Theatre each week where we concentrate very much on both improvised and scripted drama but also have done work on stage management, stage make-up, singing, and signed singing (an interest which begun with my learning of both violin and double bass to grade 4 standard).

With this same organisation, I have volunteered for the past three years at one of the children’s groups where I work helping with drama, music and art. It was with this same organisation that I decided to learn Sign Language.

I have recently gained my British Sign Language Level 1 certificate and am now beginning a Level 2 course. I began learning Sign Language at the same time as starting my A-Level in English Language and Literature, a course I have found extremely interesting. Taking these two courses concurrently was very exciting for me as learning more about the linguistics of the English Language enabled me to make comparisons between the two languages.

These interests have led me to this course which I not only feel suits my needs and interests aptly, but also excites me in its course content. Although I’ve enjoyed all of my A-Level English Language and Literature course but have found a few parts of it particularly interesting. I specifically enjoyed our coursework tasks for our AS Level as it included writing a piece of original fiction, an aspect of English which I have always enjoyed. I also enjoyed the task of performing a monologue as I have missed not being able to study drama as a subject.

I try to follow my interests outside of school and so attend a wide variety of theatre productions, art exhibitions, musical performances and subject related lectures. When studying psychology last year, I attended a large psychology conference with a variety of speakers which was both helpful and interesting. Last year I also attended an ‘art master class’ organised with Middlesex University and with nine other students, it gave more opportunity for more detailed and involved discussions. I have not yet had the opportunity to attend an English related lecture but look forward to a study day in March which will aid me with my study of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra.

Alongside this and my voluntary work with the drama organisation, I have worked in a variety of jobs which have all helped to develop my sense of responsibility as they were dependent on both teamwork and co-operation but also my use of initiative.

I have chosen to defer my entry to 2005 as I plan to complete a voluntary teaching placement in Africa. The prospect of this placement excites me as it will give me the opportunity to travel, to meet new people, to experience new cultures, and, above all, help out where much help is needed. I feel that taking a gap year is going to benefit me greatly as it will enable me to gain valuable life skills that will benefit me both at university but also in whatever I choose to do following university whether it be a postgraduate course or work.

Physics personal statement

One of the most appealing features of Physics is the way that complex physical phenomena can be explained by simple and elegant theories. I enjoy the logical aspect of the subject and I find it very satisfying when all the separate pieces of a problem fall together to create one simple theory. My interest and aptitude for maths adds an extra dimension to Studying science, particularly Physics. I relish the challenge of a complicated problem both in physics and mathematics. I am also a keen practical physicist, during a degree I would like to keep in touch with the practical side of the subject.

My interest in science extends outside the classroom. I keep up to date with new developments and ideas by reading around my school subjects in books and also in journals such as "New Scientist" and "Scientific American". I have read books by Richard Feynman, Richard Dawkins and lan Stewart, I also particularly enjoyed John Archibald Wheeler's "A Journey into Gravity and Spacetime". These books challenge me in a way that is very different from the way in which I am required to think at school.

Over the summer holidays of 2001 I arranged three weeks of work experience in the Department of Materials Science at the University of Oxford. During this time I worked with three different research groups studying the atomic structure of surfaces, use of the 3D atom probe, and the structure of magnetic storage surfaces. The work on magnetic surfaces was particularly exciting because it was a new development that could have a significant impact. I also wrote some documents for them, such as a guide to help students find Materials Science resources on the Internet. The whole experience was very useful because I had to apply what I had leamt at school to unfamiliar areas, thus using my brain in an entirely new way.

I am a keen sportsman both in and out of school, having represented my school, and the Oxford Devils' under-17 team, at basketball. For the past three years I have played cricket for the school team, being captain for two years I have been in the Oxfordshire cricket squad for my age group since the age of thirteen and have been a senior player at Bicester and North Oxford-Cricket Club since 1998. Playing team sports has taught me a lot about the importance of team work and I believe I can apply this in a working environment. Recently, I discovered an enthusiasm for scuba diving, and have achieved my open water diving license.

During my time at university I aim to get a first class education that will stand me in good stead for entering the world of work; I also want to continue my education in an environment in which I can thrive mentally. In return, the university will get a student who is hard working, always willing to learn and will put something back into the community.

Politics Personal Statement

I am interested in studying Politics at University, particularly exploring Comparative Politics and International Relations. I have been interested in politics for several years. My interest has grown recently, mainly due to world events since 9/11 and the fact that I have recently met people who share my interest in politics, although not necessarily my beliefs, and with whom I have been able to discuss and debate current issues.

I am currently studying politics at AS Level. It was not offered during my first year at college, but we successfully lobbied the senior management to allow us to study the subject. My other subjects have given me a wide range of transferable skills. English has helped me to develop my language skills. History with my skills of analysis and examining issues from different perspective, as well as looking at political issues such as why people voted for the Nazi Party in Weimar Germany or the politics behind important events like Vietnam and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Media and Film have enabled me to find out about different cultures and values, as well as movements such as feminism, especially in modules on representation and world cinema.

Overall, my A Level subjects have helped me to become organised, to manage my time and to meet deadlines for homework and coursework. I have had to show my self motivation, as in sixth form college, more emphasis is placed on personal development and learning.

Among other activities in college, I was involved in organising a conference on Citizenship. I was in group of students from my own Sixth Form and three others who organised workshops on alcohol, stress, and STIs, which were attended by people of our own age groups. As facilitators for the conference, we took part in a training day, and were given the chance to improve our skills in teamwork, problem solving and public speaking. At one point I was given the opportunity to talk to the entire group of about 200 students and staff, summing up what had been found out during the day.

I was involved in helping to organise a visit to college by our local Labour MP, including a question and answer session with the students. This was followed by a visit to the Houses of Parliament in which we met with the MP again and were also given the chance to watch a session of Prime Minister's Question Time. This was interesting because it was at the time when many questions were being asked about the consequences
of the war in Iraq.

I was involved in the college magazine in my first year, and this year have been made editor, which has helped me to develop skills in organisation, diplomacy and delegation. I have also been involved in my college's Student Union as the Communications Officer.

I would like to attend university because I want the challenge that it would present, both academically and also socially. I would also like to be able to continue my role in the student voice that I have begun at sixth form.

Politics Personal Statement

Politics has always been a passion of mine since I was introduced to the course at AS Level and I have joined the Conservative party to help me understand their dramatic fall from grace in the last decade. I am also interested in what they are trying to do to get back to the top of the tree of British politics. Although I have no political ideology as such, many single-issue lobby groups have interested me as I feel this is the way forward as opposed to conventional party politics. I now take a keen interest in public affairs. English is also a big part of my life in and I love reading and writing. Last year I entered a competition to write a film script for a TV channel and I was greatly encouraged by their response. I write in my diary daily and also occasionally pen my thoughts in the form of poetry. Ted Robbins’ work is of great interest to me as he is not only local, but also a man of many talents. As a proud Welshman, my commitment to language stretches to learning Welsh in my spare time. I am also competent in both French and Italian picked up from school and foreign excursions. Although both English and ICT involve coursework, I enjoy the fact that I have motivation to work towards university throughout the year instead of it all hinging on exams.

I have won many awards for football, cricket and athletics, including “Players’ Player of the Year” at my local club and a trophy for “Outstanding Effort”. I enjoy a challenge and am constantly trying new and interesting things. I am competent on four musical instruments – Cornet, saxophone, piano and guitar. Music is a big part of my life and I am stirred by many pieces. I often listen to music when working or just too generally relax me. I feel it heals the soul and again, is inspiration to write. In between my studies I enjoy socialising with my friends. This can be in many forms including games of tennis, football and snooker, going out to town or just one of my friend’s houses. I have a few groups of friends and I make new ones easily. This is good preparation for university.

I have been weaned on books from a young age, and a lot of my time is spent immersed in a good book. I particularly enjoy books on sport and computing, although it was Sue Townsend who first inspired me to write with her Adrian Mole series, a witty and gloriously humorous sequence of books I took to immediately. The whole concept of computers fascinates me and in my spare time I’m learning web design. I have managed two popular websites, one of which was paid employment for a company called Rivals. For my work experience I went to the local paper, which gave me a good idea of what journalism entails and encouraged my interest in the field. I wrote many stories that were published and I learned important skills such as working as part of a team and meeting deadlines. I have honed these skills in part-time jobs since.

My motivation is my lifelong desire to go to university and to better myself as a person. I have a thirst to learn and I am suited to the university lifestyle. I have always wanted to be a journalist and a degree in Politics or English can give me the scope to go on and be successful in life. I am more than mature enough to handle myself on my own in unfamiliar surroundings.

Politics Personal Statement

History - the study of the past and its implications - is most valuable as it provides research skills and improves my essay writing, as does Psychology which also gives some insights into how our minds variously function. Physics develops experimental and - along with Mathematics - analytical and problem solving skills, as well as ensuring my abilities have breadth.

Your degree course is ideal preparation for this career because it will impart the knowledge necessary for informed policy formation, and the skills - such as good communication and effective debating - needed to succeed in this competitive occupation.

I am a member of the Conservative party and follow their policy reformation after 1997 with interest. Currently my other interests include science and technology - I enjoy reading the ‘New Scientist’ journal, for instance - as well as computers, of which I regard myself as an advanced user. For example, I use the Internet for study and research into areas of interest, such as comment on government policy decisions, and upgrading hardware myself. Also, last year I had a 3D computer game ‘add-on’ - designed by myself over a lengthy period, teaching myself a great number of skills in this field - packaged on a number of international magazines, including the UK-based ‘PC Gamer’. I also enjoy walking with my family and our dogs in the Dorset countryside, and am a member of the Vegan Society.

For the past four years I have developed a strong interest in philosophy and politics and greatly enjoyed debates on these topics. Upon studying economics in the sixth form I found it to be a fascinating topic, especially since it complemented many of the political issues I had been interested in, such as the economic problems facing Nazi Germany for much of the inter-war period.

Politics has been a hobby outside school for the past few years. I have spent much time debating politics with friends and I find myself continually re-evaluating my own views, especially with regards to political theory. I am especially interested in the politics of Germany during the Nazi era. On that particular topic I have found ‘Rise and fall of the Third Reich” by William Shirer to be of particular interest. I find Hitler’s use of effective propaganda, especially with regards to the indoctrination of the Hitler youth truly incredible, as well as how it relates to modern propaganda techniques suggested by Noam Chomsky in Manufacturing Consent.

During my time doing Economics I have found many aspects of the course that interest me, such as the debate on whether or not Britain should join the Euro, and I personally agree with Gordon Brown that in economic terms, joining the Euro is a bad idea at present, however at the same time I believe that as a political decision, joining the Euro would be beneficial, both to Britain and the rest of Europe. I believe the decision to commit Britain’s control over interest rates to a European body is dangerous at a time when Britain is relatively thriving when compared to Germany, who are trying to struggle out of a recession.

I believe Philosophy is one of the fundamental components of political theory. Political Philosophy will ask such questions as, “Are certain Political theories better adapted to human nature than others”. This comes down the question of human nature and idea’s such as nature vs. nurture as to whether man’s behaviour is primarily dependent on ones genes, and hence biological ancestry, or is affected throughout ones life by the actions of others around them, especially during childhood when most people are most impressionable.

My Economics was also furthered by my participation in the Young Enterprise competition. I was Marketing Director and learnt the importance of good communication skills both within the company and to clients. I also took the Young Enterprise exam and managed to attain a Distinction. Within the Perse School I have attained both music and drama colours, the latter being for doing sound for various school drama events.

I enjoy sports, especially racket sports like squash and badminton. I have a strong love of music, both listening and playing. I have played the drums for 7 years and am presently working towards my Grade 8 drums. I play in the school Wind Band and Swing Band as well in my own band, Xeoro, and I hope that I will be able to further myself during my university years by actively participating in the Musical activities the University has to offer.

The balance of schoolwork, musical activities and keeping a social life while still keeping time to pursue other hobbies has meant that I learnt to cope with a busy lifestyle. I believe this will help me cope with the hard work needed to succeed in university life and that in doing this course I can combine and further enhance my interests in Politics, Philosophy and Economics.

心理学

From an early age I have been intrigued by the human mind and how it works. This interest has been enhanced through my study of psychology. Although I have only studied this subject for a relatively short period of time, I have enjoyed the variety the A-level course provides and I feel I have had a sample of different fields of this subject. I have particularly enjoyed studying comparative psychology because I am interested in how the human mind can be explained in evolutionary terms and how we can be compared to non-human animals.

I have always enjoyed mathematics, both learning and application. I have relished the course I have taken at college as it has a variety of areas and the opportunity to study different branches. I have particularly enjoyed areas of pure mathematics that I have covered since commencing A-levels and I have developed my enthusiasm for algebra by applying it to different problems. I also feel that my statistical background will be advantageous to my psychology work. I have enhanced my assessment and evaluation skills through my A-level in Religious Studies, particularly the modules on philosophy and ethics. I feel that my study into ethics is advantageous when applied to the highly problematic field of psychological research. My logical approach was also demonstrated with my AS-level in economics which gave me the opportunity to interpret data and the effect different factors have on a situation.

I demonstrated my people skills when I undertook work experience at a local special needs school after I had completed my GCSEs. This week gave me the opportunity to assist teachers and carers with large groups of children of different ages and abilities. This included helping heavily disabled children with Physical Education lessons, autistic children with art classes and aiding pupils with severe epilepsy to do basic numeracy and literacy. I also helped a group of teenagers, most older than myself with a range of physical and learning disabilities, to do basic cookery. I found this week very rewarding, although it was both mentally and physically taxing as children had to be supervised, and often assisted, at all times.

My part-time job at a doctor's surgery has made me more a responsible individual as I deal with patient confidentiality. I have also become more confident and gained a great deal of common sense as I deal with, and reassure, members of the public.

In my free time I enjoy participating in a variety of different activities. I am a member of a local gym which I attend several times a week, I am a keen horse-rider, I regularly go on skiing holidays and I have recently started Salsa dancing. I have also participated in Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards and hope to start my Gold Award. I particularly enjoy the planning and undertaking of expeditions as they are physically challenging and encourage teamwork. I also enjoyed the 'service' required for the awards. For my bronze award I helped at a local Brownie Pack and this included helping to prepare activities and going away on a 'Pack Holiday' residential weekend with the girls. I was able to do this through my links with Guiding, I was a member of this organisation for ten years and was presented with my Baden Powell Award, the highest achievement that could be gained by a Guide.

I am a keen musician and I enjoy the clarinet, gaining Grade 2 with merit 5 years ago before focussing on pieces that I enjoyed including those in a Jazz-style in 'the Peter Brown Band'. and .I have been a member of several choirs, the highlight being performing Honnegar's Joan d'Arc in the BBC Proms in the Albert Hall as a member of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Choir. As a member I also sang in the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, the Liverpool Cathedral and on 'Songs of Praise'. I am an active church member and I regularly volunteer at fund-raising efforts.
At college I am a charity representative. This position of responsibility involves fund-raising and selecting charities that the college supports, a role which I take seriously and enjoy doing. For my silver Duke of Edinburgh award I volunteered at my local Oxfam shop for sixth months. I enjoyed meeting members of the public and working with others volunteers to raise money. I have also taken part in my church fund-raisers and I am currently training for the Liverpool Ladies 10km Run next year in aid of a local hospice.

I am a logical thinker and this, combined with my enthusiasm for the human mind, leads towards a future in a scientific field of psychology. The combination of my interests logically suggests a career such as that in ergonomics and this idea has been encouraged by a recent meeting that I had with team of psychologists concerned with Health and Safety.

Graphic Design

have always been interested in Graphic Design and have never considered anything else as a career. Once at High school I chose the course as an option at GCSE level. For my GCSE I came away with a 100% mark in my course work and an A* for my exam, the highest overall grade seen at the school.

I am hoping to do Graphic Design at Uni. whilst still living at home. This will allow me to focus on my studies, without distraction.

Even before college I spent my time voluntarily designing graphics for web sites. At first it was just a one off logo for a friend, but this has turned into doing three complete web sites. This developed my skills in using Photoshop, Pagemaker, Illustrator, Macromedia Flash & Dreamweaver and other web orientated graphics tools.

As I have come through college, I have found that, as a career, I would like to go into advertising, or Creative Digital Design. I find I enjoy the design of posters, CD/book covers, technical diagrams, using computers and other interactive technology.

Out of college, I have a part-time job at a cycle shop and also a job at a hotel, working in the kitchen. Here I am hoping to start my NVQ in Health and Safety, this will be the first step in training to be a part-time chef. I have also worked previously in a range of part-time jobs, including a full-time summer job at a camping suppliers.

At home, I like to spend my time socialising, riding mountain bikes, competitively building/racing radio controlled cars, playing football/basketball, and riding motorbikes; I have just finished restoring a Suzuki Bandit. I also take an interest in composing dance music using computers, CD's and Vinyl.

I have always considered Computing both exciting and challenging. From the age of six I have enjoyed programming in high-level languages such as BASIC on an Oric-1 machine. My interests were further inspired with the arrival of an Acorn Archimedes several years later, and I was encouraged to start developing applications using the WIMP environment.

At the age of 14 I attended an adult evening class in GCSE Computing. I wrote a relational database in SAM, a high-level database language as part of my coursework. The database was designed for my mother, a community nurse, who needed to keep track of her patients records and the treatment they had received. During my GCSE Technology course I developed an application allowing movement to be processed and then reproduced as sound, using a CCD Camera, digitizer and a MIDI Tone Generator. The project was developed and written in ARM Assembler. More recently I have written and developed programs in a variety of high and low level languages, including; Visual Basic, Delphi (Pascal) and ARM Assembler, using an Acorn RISC PC and a Pentium 2 machine.

Following school examinations a Solicitor's firm employed me during the summer holidays. Alongside my office responsibilities, I helped to develop a database in Microsoft Access that was to be a pilot test in the firm, prior to implementation in other branches. After starting College, Prism Data Management employed me as a part-time member of their telephone sales team. I was interviewed and selected for the job, as a result of my Computing abilities.

After consultation, and advice from career advisors, tutors and universities, I re-evaluated my career aspirations and re-structured my A-Level subjects to meet the requirements for most degree courses in Computer Science. Consequently I am currently studying; Computing, Law, AS Government and Politics, AS Religious Studies and AS Mathematics.

As part of my A-Level Computing course I am developing an MOT database in Microsoft Access using Visual Basic for a close relative who owns and manages a chain of motor-garages. The system will be demonstrated, evaluated and implemented in early 1999. It is expected to manage and assist in the booking, testing and servicing processes, and will maintain a valid, automated database of customers.

My other interests include composing music of varied genre in our home studio, using sequencing and recording equipment. I enjoy playing the keyboard and the saxophone. I am an active member of the local Church and have assisted in the running of many youth events, Alpha Bible study courses and Freedom, a Christian youth band.

I consider myself a reliable and enthusiastic individual. My studies in the social sciences have developed my interpersonal and communicative skills. Proficient skills in Computing have inspired me to design a web page (http://come.to/gates-home/). I am confident that a degree in Computer Science will further enhance my future career aspirations in the Computing industry.

I realise Computer Science is at the cutting edge of the technological revolution, and that computers are becoming a vital tool for industries and households alike. Computers are relevant to a vast majority of people across the world, and I aim to be at the forefront of this revolution, improving people’s lives through speech recognition, neural communications or similar areas.

My computer experience includes constructing a Web Site, producing a monthly Newsletter for my local choir, and also a week’s work experience with Swanlind, an advertising firm that creates Web Sites and promotional videos for big-name companies. During this time, I redesigned the promotional leaflets used by the company itself. My GCSE Design and Technology project involved a logic-based electronic system to control light signals for a model railway.

I have been a member of my local Parish Church Choir for over ten years, during which time we have been a visiting choir to many Cathedrals during the summer breaks, and have toured Paris. It is renowned for being one of the few ‘male only’ parish church choirs left in the country which is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music. Recently it has recorded a service for Palm Sunday for the BBC World Service, and this November performs for the second occasion this decade in Birmingham Symphony Hall’s Festival of Remembrance. I also sing in the School Choir and the ‘Choral Society’, and have passed my Associated Board Grade VIII Singing exam with Merit.

In 1998 I won the City of Birmingham’s Choir’s ‘Write a Carol for Christmas’ competition, and this year the (London) Bach Choir’s ‘Write a Carol for Christmas’ competition. The two carols written for these competitions were performed in the choirs’ Family Christmas Concerts in Symphony Hall and the Royal Albert Hall respectively.

This year I am the School Organist, and have also passed my Grade VII Piano.

I am a member of my School’s Senior Athletics team, competing in the Triple Jump and Sprints, or running the scoring system at meetings, using a custom-built computer program. I play table tennis in my spare time, and have played rugby for the school.

I have been to Germany on many occasions, most notably on the school German Exchange to Wiesbaden, but also with my Father’s scout group, which stays in a youth hostel belonging to family friends. On these trips, I have had the opportunity to practice my Language skills, and would like to further them wherever possible.

I hope that after University I can progress and gain a worthwhile job in the computing world, either in Britain or abroad. Gaining a degree is to me the best way to further my learning and I hope that my interest in technology will enable me to get the best out of the course.

I'm most interested in going to England for a Computer Science degree because of the extraordinary learning possibilities that being in a new environment can provide, as well as being the most personally and educationally rewarding. Attending university in England would give me the type of challenge I desire. Coming to this conclusion after spending a short vacation in Manchester, I noticed how the English system tends to be more focused and intensive on the specific subject being studied. Having courses that were superfluous was the reason for a lack of enthusiasm with my past education, I often found that I would finish coursework in school ahead of schedule and wouldn't be allowed to advance beyond other students. My past education has been unconventional in that I've had private, public, and home schooling. As a home studies student I had to maintain self discipline to accomplish my goals and achieve my GED at 16. In public school I was placed in advanced classes and given a heavier workload. One year my teacher chose me to tutor students with learning disabilities, something which required patience and adaptive skills.

My attraction to computers and technology at an early age has continued. Although not academically trained, I have taught myself to analyze practical problems and evolve workable solutions. This ability demonstrates my determination to see the problem through and in doing so enhance my competency in using multiple computing platforms such as Windows and Linux. Working on my own I discovered a major security flaw in Microsoft Office Online which saved the company from suffering a large loss in user data as well as avoiding bad publicity. This self development of computer skills was complimented by the foundations of a liberal education given to me by my grandfather, a college professor for over 40 years.

I have learned to work well on cooperative projects. Recently I was a member of a team which completed a website involving thousands of items for a large online retailer. I enjoyed brainstorming and debating, then making and applying an actual solution. Most rewarding to me is the thrill I get when applying what I've learned to create and finish a project. Starting something, seeing it through to gestation, and have it come alive benefiting others is what I most enjoy.

Over the past years I have had a keen interest in computers and electronic communications. I was self taught until I began to study information technology at Sixth Form College. I completed a GNVQ Information Technology at City of Westminster College. I am currently doing a BSc in Computer Communications & Networks at the Department of Computers and Telematics within the University of Westminster. I am doing this course to learn more in this field and to attain a high level qualification. I hope to go on to specialize in telecommunications at postgraduate level.

I have worked at City University, where I had the task of authoring a set of web pages. The work that I did was not only published on the internet, but was also part of a display at the Barbican. Whilst on my placement I also had the opportunity to put together a multi media presentation.

In my spare time I enjoy authoring in html, and have put together a number of pages. I have constructed a site for an American football team. I am learning how to program in Pascal and C++ at the moment, and have written a few simple programs independently. I am also investigating the Java language. I also enjoy maintaining my multi platform network at home.

I have been a scout leader for a number of years now. This role is demanding and requires determination, but very rewarding. At college I was the Treasurer for the students union, and in previous year I was the Communications officer. As an executive officer I played a vital part in the union. I also play American football for the London Capitals. The team has a good record, and so far while with the team I have attained one national title, three conference titles, and two league titles.

I recognise that there is a big future in computers and electronic communications, especially with the recent well publicised boom in multi media and the internet. I wish to be part of that future taking computers into new areas of life, helping people to raise the standard of living.

My fascination with science started at a very early age. The branch of science that interested me most had always been physics. My approach led me to ask questions like “What makes the InterCity 125 the (then) fastest train in the world?” after having travelled on it. Hence I pursued a string of hobbies such as trainspotting, concentrating on things like the power of the engines and how they work. When they ran into one another, I would ask questions such as “What makes the cab crumple in the way that it does? What if instead I bash two neutrons together at near to the speed of light?” In order to keep up to date with all the new developments I read the New Scientist every week. I have chosen to do Physics at university simply as a quest for knowledge. My interest in music gradually merged with my interest in physics as I learnt to tune the Harpsichord and listening out for ‘resultants’ which are the tell-tale sign of bad tuning. In the universities that offer it, I have chosen to do Physics/Music joint degrees so that I can extend my understanding of the physical phenomena of music and can also enjoy my violin-playing. In other universities I have chosen courses that delay specialisation because I have also a strong interest in the chemistry of materials.

In my free time I pursue a wide range of activities including music (performing, listening and composing, specialising in the music of the Baroque period, having attained A/B Grade 8 on the Violin and Grade 5 with Distinction in Theory), circuit design and construction, calligraphy, philately, software design and computer programming (Pascal, C, HTML, BASIC, 8086 and 6502 Assembler), typesetting and publishing - including the school arts magazine “Cerulean”, sailing in dinghies, visiting historical sites and reading about them. I have been a committee member of the computer society, secretary of the junior scripture union, an assistant school librarian, a cricketer in the 3rd XI, on the committee of the School Student Council and on the panel of the “Young Enterprise” scheme.

When Science ‘at home’ happened in 1995 I presented a very successful display on rates of reaction and I subsequently gained an academic scholarship to Felsted. I have given various talks as a member of the debating society, representing my division and the school in various debates. After having been awarded a Senior Scholarship in the Lower Sixth at Felsted, I was invited to join the “Andrew Society”, the senior academic society of the school, to which I gave various presentations. I have also played in at least 7 orchestras, participated in various plays & musicals, sung in various choirs, rehearsed the orchestra for the “divisional music contest” and led the William Wood Harpsichord Trio for 2 years, including an item in a concert at the Usher Hall. During the Summer I was responsible for the Northern Festival Sinfonia, and organised a charity concert for them which raised a substantial amount of money for the Handel House Trust.

In my Lower Sixth I spent considerable time helping with the maintenance and repairs of the school computers and the network, and also wrote various applications some of which have been released as shareware. Thus, this summer I was able to work as a freelance computing consultant in Edinburgh. I have been very interested in pottery and the chemistry of glazes, when I had the opportunity to attend a pottery class after school. In my upbringing I attended various masterclasses on Mathematics and Physics, a Theology class every week for 3 years, the ‘Understanding Industry’ course and an SSPCA ‘Caring for Animals’ course in 1994, obtained 3 Gold certificates in Scottish Mathematics competitions, including one ‘best in school’, as well as qualifying as a Leading Seaman in CCF Navy.

For admission to a university in England you have to fill in a form from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). They for a very reasonable fee provide all applicants to unversities and colleges in the UK with a way to apply to up to 6 universities (or multiple courses at, say 3 universities). Part of the form (apart from all the obvious details such as name and address), is half a page where you are asked to write about yourself, your interests and so on. Inevitably you have to make it sound as good as possible, as you're trying to sell yourself to the universities you're applying to...

I applied to the universities of Aston, Bath, Bristol, Cambridge, Imperial College London, and Loughborough. All for an MEng (Master of Engineering degree) in Chemical Engineering, except for Bristol where I went for an MEng in Computer Science, so this is tailored towards those courses. Anyway... Here it is. I don't guarantee that you won't get bored! ;-). (NB this was written in the summer of 1999, and is therefore not too current!).

Reasons for Course Choice

Since beginning secondary school, I've been very interested in Chemistry and Computing. Besides my normal schoolwork I've read around these two subjects. Because I am also very keen on Mathematics and Physics, I want to pursue a degree course that combines all or most of these. Both of my parents are Science/Engineering graduates and they have taught me some of the qualities needed for a degree course in this field. This has encouraged me to find out about the opportunities available.

Aims

I have applied to several firms for sponsorship while at university and during a gap year, with the intention of getting Engineering-related work experience. This would give me valuable experience for the course at university. I hope to obtain a Master of Engineering degree and become employed in research and development in the oil or food industry. Eventually, I would like to do postgraduate study, and perhaps even teach Chemistry/Engineering.

Interests

I play basketball, tennis, volleyball, and I like kayaking. By far my biggest sports interest, however, is orienteering. I've won several trophies for Andalusian and league championships, and I've helped to organise regional orienteering events. I have also designed the database system for my club. My greatest interest outside school is computing. I have done a large amount of web design. I help maintain the computer systems at my father's workplace; and I also do some part time work teaching people on a one-to-one basis how to use their computers. I like writing manuals or "notes" on things related to computers, and have published an article on web design in a small US computer magazine. I have written papers on the use of data-logging and other equipment for my school's science department. This year, I was responsible for laying out my school's entire yearbook using DTP software. Recently, I was employed developing a web site and training staff for an organisation in London.

When I have time I play the keyboard, and also do some sound engineering: I used to operate the mixing desk at my local church, as well as help at my parents' workplace, which is a professional recording studio. I enjoy teaching and have given weekly tuition in Maths and English.

General Points

I've lived in Spain for 14 years and am fluent in Spanish. In addition, my parents work with North Africans, Middle Easterners, Americans, Spaniards, Britons, and people of other nationalities. I have gained valuable experience growing up with many different cultures around me, and as a result appreciate the difficulties of cross-cultural communication. I have been part of several "King's Kids", teams which perform music and dance all over Spain. This entailed travelling away from home for 3 weeks at a time, and having to work with around 60 other people. I think that this has made me a fairly rounded person, and I therefore feel confident about "fitting in" with people from any culture.

I am applying to university to read chemistry because this is the subject that I enjoy most. As with science in general, I find it interesting, often fascinating, and I feel that I could gain much from studying it at university.

Last year I spent a fortnight on work experience, and enjoyed both of my two placements. At Birmingham University School of Chemistry, I was able to use some techniques that were new to me at the time - such as GCMS, HPLC, and I.R. spectroscopy. I found it particularly enjoyable when I later learnt about the theory behind these at school. At Russell's Hall Hospital, working in the pathology labs, I saw some medical applications of these and various other techniques, and was able to learn a little more about the science behind them.

I have just finished taking part in a six-week research project at Birmingham University with a bursary from the Nuffield Foundation. The project was organic chemistry based, and involved working towards the synthesis of a [2]catenane, with an intermediary being the synthesis of a pseudorotaxane. I also hope to gain a Crest 'gold' award for this work.

In and out of school, much of my free time is devoted to playing sport or rehearsing and performing in a number of orchestras and smaller groups.

I play the oboe, and earlier this year I achieved a distinction at grade VIII. I have been very lucky to play in my school Symphony Orchestra, which has been an enjoyable experience, as well as Concert band. I also play in a wind quintet at school and sing in one of the choirs. Out of school, I play oboe in Birmingham Schools Baroque Orchestra and contra-bass recorder in B.S. Recorder Sinfonia. Earlier this year I performed in the National Festival of Music for Youth, in Symphony Hall, with the Sinfonia, and I have just been asked to play solo recorder in a concerto with B.S.B.O. later this year. I intend to continue playing music at university.

In season, I am the goalkeeper for my school Hockey 1ST XI, and sometimes for my local hockey club. I enjoy this - although to prioritize work I have had to cut down on these activities recently. I also enjoy cycling and canoeing - I often ride to school in summer.

I am one of a number of licensed radio amateurs in school, and I am the secretary of my school Amateur Radio & Electronics Society. We are lucky as we have some good equipment provided by the school, including a number of aerials on the roof! When conditions are good, I have been able to speak to other amateurs as far away as America and Australia. Most years we take part in a 24-hour competition run annually by the Radio Society of Great Britain.

At university, I hope to further my understanding of chemistry and develop as a scientist. I enjoy a challenge and the reward that comes from solving a problem, or understanding a new concept, and I believe this is why I find science so interesting. I also enjoy an active life, and I intend to contribute to university life through music and sport.

i am a person keen on challenges. law will provide me with the kind of constant challenge i have always craved, while helping me to improve my analytical, practical & communication skills. also my concern and curiosity about society and its people inspired me to pursue this subject for my higher education, as i believe law plays an essential role in the changing nature of society.

my upbringing has honed my perception of society and people leading me to be acutely aware of social injustice, inequality, exploitation, discrimination, and religious fundamentalism, especially in a society such as the one i come from - bangladesh. i possess a desire, to struggle if necessary through my life in establishing a society which will be free from exploitation and inequality. as such, i have chosen to study law, for i believe the proper implementation of law is the only potent weapon to obliterate injustice. i believe throughout the history of the world, working classes have been deceived by the upper class bourgeoisie and the elites - my ultimate goal in life is to establish the rights of the socially deprived classes. i always have wondered why law has not been used to raise the voice of the working class, and why it has been used to safeguard the interests of people who are exploiting. i seek a new definition of human rights – the true definition, without exploitation and corruption colouring the notion. my greatest wonder is why our society and the legal system, do not point out economic exploitation as an abuse of human rights; for
it is the root of poverty, which elicits crime. if the creation of law is to
curb injustice, why has it not been used to eradicate this injustice? taking law as a subject for higher education will hopefully help me find answers to my questions, and will teach me the proper method of implementation.

i am someone who is passionate to evaluate problems. i am not an extremist but i do not hesitate to resort to radical measures if the situation forces it. i believe, in a society, co-operation is more desired than competition; competition doesn’t necessarily bring rapid prosperity. i adhere to a socialistic political ideology, and aim to devote myself in establishing true socialism. i am from a country, which has been subject to military dictatorship for over twenty years after her independence. my political consciousness grew during the time, when my father was imprisoned by the military just because he was a leader of a political party who opposed military regime. police and military jointly ran a brutal campaign throughout the country to repress politicians, where they imprisoned and sometimes killed thousands of students, politicians, professionals, workers, and even soldiers. these incidents severely affected my family, making my childhood a turbulent time. after the military regime failed, a western style democratic political structure was set up, which gave nothing, yet increased the discontent of the masses, and created some elites, who virtually control the country. wealth and power both are centralized to them, law is a puppet in their hand, and they control everything, from economy to politics. millions of people live below the poverty level, and there is nobody, not one strong and resilient political party to represent them. extreme form of capitalism has taken over our country’s social and human values, and morality is at the brink of extinction. corruption is everywhere, human rights abuses are innumerable, political repression is paramount, money is power
and power is everything. this indisciplined violent condition of my country
created a rebellious nature within me that is why i have set my ambition to
restructure the socio-political structure of my country in a radical way. i
would like to utilize the knowledge i acquire from my life at university and
beyond to clarify and show me the proper way of implementation of my thoughts.

i have proved myself as an efficient and responsible student through primary and secondary school, i have been able to maintain and improve my grades, which are consistently good. currently i am undertaking a’ levels in history, government & politics, and bengali. being an ambitious and inquisitive person, even after completing a foundation programme with an overall a grade, i have chosen to do three a’ levels in one year to study in one of the top british universities. history has always fascinated me; though this is the first time i am studying this subject in detail. in government & politics, i am learning about the procedures of law making and the system of politics and government in different countries. languages have always been of interest to me, and my favoured loyalty is to my mother tongue - bengali.

i have spent my time productively on extra curricular activities. i have
keenly taken part in debating, student politics and acting in television dramas. i headed my school’s debating society for one year and independently achieved many prizes in speech competitions at local and national levels. my hobbies include reading, playing cricket and table tennis, web browsing, etc.

the principal reason for my desire to study at uk is the quality of teaching
here and particularly in my chosen subject, law. i also find exciting the
prospect of joining a university hee with international flavours and exceptional research facilities. i believe university is a place for accumulating more interests, for meeting people, for working hard, for finding a niche in life. i feel i have the commitment and confidence of giving my best during my university career and afterwards.

During my study at physics department in the beginning years, i had been
delving on physics analytical methods and experimental skills. but at the same time, i also found many physics problems were either toocomplicated to be written as an equation, or impossible to be solved due to their large amount of computation. one day by chance, i visited a computational physics laboratory, in which i was deeply impressed with computers'' great power in calculation and strong ability to graphics. from then on, i have been holding an idea that with the aid of computers, we will solve some physics problems, which are difficult to be dealt with by traditional methods.

1. creativity is the essential character for a successful researcher in the
spring of 2000, when i was studying atomic physics, i felt that states of atoms in equivalent electron configurations were rather difficult to obtain.
traditional methods to get it were both arduous and boring. not being content with that, i was determined to develop my own method. after two months of painstaking efforts, i finally came up with a kind of computing method and wrote a program in c language, which can easily obtain states of atoms in any equivalent electron configuration. the main idea of my program has been published in college physics, 12(2001), which is one of the most authoritative magazines in the field of physics science in china. the work involves a whole series of research activities, including defining the problem, conceiving computational methods, designing and modifying the programs, and writing the thesis, which were all done by myself. the process has strengthened my ability to think and work independently. it has also reinforced my belief that determination, diligence and creativity are indispensable to a successful researcher.

2. my experience at cai r&d center, f*** university with intense interest in simulation of physical process, i joined physics cai (computer aided uction) r&d center of f** university, a research center well known for developing physics cai software. through working in the center, i have improved my skills to simulate a physics phenomenon or to conduct experiments with the aid of computers. i was involved in producing solid state physics cai courseware web version, which had been put on the web site of the united nations educational, scientific and cultural organization (unesco), as a part of its project: unesco global science and technical education network (unesco-gsten). my main responsibility was to make most of its three-dimensional animation in the virtual reality modeling language (vrml). those days in physics cai r&d center taught me how to be a good team player. three of my classmates and i formed a group, in which views were exchanged about experiment simulation and anything related to cai. in the fall of 2000, we applied for the "scientific innovation fund of f*** university". after three rounds of competition, we succeeded in obtaining a first class grant of 3500rmb($500) for our project: the modern physics cai courseware. out of 80 groups in my university, only 9 won the award. we aimed to present physics pictures in the form of graphics and animation. it was our hope that the courseware can provide valuable assistance to students in their learning of modern physics. i am responsible for the simulation of some well-known experiments, such as rutherford scattering and compton effect. by now, the major part of the courseware has been completed and we will it on the national exhibition soon.

3. my independent research ability as a junior, i was among those students in my grade who first had the opportunity to take part in actual research. in september 2000, i joined the theoretical physics group to do research on magnetics under the guidance of prof. r** tao, a noted chinese scientist in this field. owing to the systematic theoretical learning and much practice in cai r&d center, i had then well prepared myself in magnetic research. i was once assigned to compute the magnetic resistance of a 32x32 ferromagnetic layer, pinned by an antiferromagnetic layer. i developed an application, which can monitor the magnetic resistance of the ferromagnetic layer when the angle of the pinning layer was changed. being familiar with fft (fast fourier transform), i managed to apply it to the process of computation, which was then accelerated significantly. as a result, the computable size of the ferromagnetic layer can be enlarged from 32x32 to 256x256. after changing the parameters, the results were enhanced, and i am currently amending the paper. my work has won the kind attention from prof. p** sheng, head of the department of physics at h*** university of science and technology. from august 8th, 2001 to august 21st, 2001, he invited me to his department to collaborate in magnetic resistance research. when i was in hong kong, the s** company, which specialized in designing and producing magnetic heads for hard disks, showed great interest in my giant magnetoresistance (gmr) simulation software. i talked at length with the company''s engineer about the possibility to put my software into the industrial use. when simulating the magnetic loop of a ferromagnetic layer, i discovered several quantum states, which could be obtained by changing the magnetic field. because these new quantum states are all quite stable, they can be used to record information in multi-bits. at the 2001 fall meeting of china''s physical society, prof. tao was invited to make a presentation based on a paper entitled "multi-bits recording", of which i was labeled as the first author.

4. extracurricular activities my heavy academic load has never deterred me from taking part in extracurricular activities. as a member of class board in charge of physical exercises in my grade, i organized numerous sports
activities, such as "dormitory cup" of basketball game, ping-pong tournaments and so on. through these activities, i have improved my capability of leadership, organization and teamwork, which, combined with my intellectual vigor, should help make me ready for any challenges. i wish to pursue a phd degree in condensed matter physics, for its intrinsic beauty and practical perspective have fascinated me. attracted by the academic atmosphere and advanced research facilities you offer, i consider your school an ideal place for me. from the material you sent and your web site, i also find my research experience closely related to the academic field of some faculties, which convinced me that your department provides appropriate programs for me. as i have gained extensive experience in computational analysis and modeling, you may find me a competent student for the advanced research area i have mentioned. ultimately, i aim to devote myself to a science career, in which i can use my knowledge and skills in a creative and practical manner.
