微软公司技术总监Ozzie对参加会议的顶级开发商说，微软希望公开授权这项在网络与电脑程序之间共享数据的简单技术，至于微软是否控制这项技术则无关紧要。
作为一种已知技术概念，“活动剪贴板”(Live Clipboard)将采用许多电脑程序所广泛使用的剪贴板功能，并把它扩展到网络上，以便用户共享网站之间的有组织数据，或把这些数据转贴到电脑程序上。
通过连续技术演示，微软技术总监显示了用户可以简单地将复杂结构信息从一个网站剪贴到其他网站上。或者在保持数据格式同时将同一数据移至Windows电脑正在运行的程序上。
例如，Ozzie总监将自己电脑中地址簿联系人信息复制到一个在线购物结算网页上，他用一个飞快的手势填好了订单处理页面。

Windows Live Clipboard basically serves three purposes: to bridge web-to-web, web-to-PC, and PC-to-web structured data.
The first example is that of PC-to-web copying and pasting. The Live Clipboard sits in your taskbar as a Windows application and acts as a scrapbook similar to OneNote. When you visit a website that asks you to fill out a long form, you can paste data from the Live Clipboard into the form in an AutoFill fashion. It's nothing spectacular, but it does seem quick and easy.
While the PC-to-web copying doesn't appear to be all that inventive, the web-to-PC copying actually is. Let's say that you are visiting a website that contains an event that you would like to attend. By clicking on the Live Clipboard icon
, a context menu appears where you can instantly copy structured data to the clipboard then paste it into your Outlook calendar, just as you would paste plain text from the web into a word processing application. The final example, web-to-web copying and pasting, is also kind of nifty. By using hidden textboxes and XML, structured data can be tunneled through Live Clipboard to other websites. By using this format, Live Clipboard can be supported by several different browsers since it is only using HTML and XML.
One of my biggest fears about the Live Clipboard is that it could be an in-your-face tool similar to Office's clipboard. It's not the end of the world when Office nags me to clear or keep the clipboard, but it still kills me to click "No." I don't know if I've ever kept my clipboard data around to be honest. Nevertheless, Windows Live Clipboard doesn't appear to be naggilicious in its current form—all events are instantiated by the user.
