This information affects Chinese graduate students wanting to come to UCL, either on a research visit of up to one year as part of their Chinese PhD, or to pursue full-time PhD studies for a UCL degree.
Visiting PhD students:
For a one-year trial period, five visiting PhD scholarships for the academic year 2008/09 are available for students currently enrolled in PhD programmes in China. Awards will cover up to one year’s full tuition fees. Any bench fees must be covered by the host department.
Applicants must be awarded a China Scholarship Council (CSC) scholarship covering their travel and living expenses, and must be recommended by and enrolled in a PhD programme at a 985 university in China or equivalent research institute. Potential applicants must in the first instance apply to the appropriate department at UCL.
Please note that all other visiting PhD students will be expected to pay UCL tuition at the usual rates: we do not have an agreement with the CSC to take an unlimited number of non-paying visiting students.
Each department can recommend a maximum of 2 applications, ranked in order of preference. Applications should be in electronic form, and should include a departmental letter explaining how the student will be supervised, and how the student’s presence will help reinforce or create research links with China. All applications will be reviewed by a scholarships panel, and criteria will include the quality of the student, their project proposal, and the departmental letter.
We are attaching a short application form for these scholarships. Successful applicants must be notified by Feb 20, so your materials will have to reach us by February 11.
Full-time UCL PhD students:
For students applying to pursue full-time M.Phil/PhD studies at UCL, the arrangements are essentially the same as last year. Again, only a small number of awards will be made, and application will be via the ORS scheme. Details of how to apply for the UCL/CSC scholarships can be found here: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/...cl_scholarships .
Joint PhDs
Students may also ask you about Joint PhD’s. At present we have no Joint PhD programmes with China. If you are interested in creating one in your discipline, please contact Julia Abbott in Michael Worton’s office. Please be aware that at present we have no scholarship schemes that would cover students on such PhD’s.
